Ridge, Hip and Valley Repairs in Cheshire

Ridges, hips and valleys are where the slopes of a roof meet, and where wind and water do the most damage. We re-bed, refix and renew them so the roof stays weathertight.

Ridge, Hip and Valley Repairs across Cheshire

Ridge and hip tiles are traditionally bedded in mortar, which cracks and falls out over the years. Valleys carry large amounts of water and their linings, whether lead, GRP or tile, can split or clog. Wind lifts loose ridge tiles and can send them to the ground.

We re-bed ridges and hips in fresh mortar, fit modern dry-fix ridge systems that allow ventilation and need less maintenance, and renew valleys in lead or GRP. We also repair verges and check the roof around them, because the edge of a roof takes more wind than the middle.

Signs your ridges, hips or valleys need work

  • Crumbling or missing mortar along the ridge or hips
  • Ridge tiles that have shifted, tilted or come loose
  • Moss or debris building up in a valley, or water spilling over it
  • Stains or damp that follow the line of a valley inside the roof
  • Loose or damaged verge tiles at the edges of the roof

How we repair them

We remove loose tiles and old mortar, then re-bed the ridge or hip on fresh mortar with the right fixings for the exposure. On many roofs a dry-fix system is a better long-term choice, because it clamps tiles mechanically and ventilates the roof space.

For valleys we strip back, check the boards, line with lead or GRP and relay the tiles or slates alongside, with the right overlap. We keep the roof watertight each day and show you before and after photos.

Mortar or dry-fix?

Mortar-bedded ridges look traditional and suit many period roofs. Dry-fix systems need less maintenance and are widely used on modern roofs. We recommend the one that suits your roof and, in conservation areas, the one the rules require.

What affects the cost?

Cost depends on the length of ridge and hips, the number and type of valleys, the access and the scaffold needed. We survey and give you a fixed price in writing.

Ridge, Hip and Valley Repairs: your questions answered

How often should a ridge be re-bedded?

It varies. Mortar often needs attention after several decades, sooner on exposed roofs. A check every few years catches problems early.

Can you fix a leaking valley without a new roof?

Usually, yes. A valley can be stripped and relined without replacing the rest of the roof, if the surrounding covering is sound.

Will you check the rest of the roof while you are up there?

Yes, and we tell you if anything else needs attention. Nothing is added without your agreement.

Can solar panels go near ridges and valleys?

Panels need set-back distances from ridges, hips and edges, and valleys can affect layout. We plan this at the survey. See solar panels.
