In-Roof Solar Panels
In-Roof Solar Panels in Cheshire
In-roof solar panels sit in the roof in place of the tiles, instead of on top of it. The result is a flatter, cleaner look, and the panels double as part of the roof covering. They suit new roofs, re-roofs and extensions.

In-Roof Solar Panels across Cheshire
Standard solar panels are mounted on rails above the tiles. In-roof panels, sometimes called solar roof tiles or integrated panels, replace part of the covering and are weathered into it with their own flashings. They are neat, and some people prefer them for visual reasons or for period and conservation-area homes where raised panels would stand out.
In-roof systems are usually fitted as part of a re-roof or a new roof, because they replace tiles and need the roof stripped back. They cost more than on-roof panels, and they need careful detailing to stay watertight and ventilated. We survey the roof and tell you honestly whether in-roof is worth it for your home.

Why people choose in-roof solar
- You prefer a flush, low-profile look to panels standing above the roof
- You are re-roofing and want to build the panels in
- You live in a conservation area or somewhere appearance matters
- You have a new extension or outbuilding with a new roof
- Weight, wind or visual impact make on-roof mounting less suitable
How we fit an in-roof system
We strip the area, check and repair battens and felt, fit the in-roof tray or framing and weather it into the surrounding tiles with the manufacturer’s flashings. Panels, cabling and inverter go in as with any solar system, and we test and commission as normal.
Detailing matters more than with standard panels, because the panels are now part of the weatherproofing and need airflow underneath to keep cool. We follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely and keep the roof watertight each day.

In-roof or on-roof?
On-roof panels cost less, are easier to add to an existing roof and are simple to replace or clean. In-roof panels look neater and cover part of the roof, but cost more and work best with a re-roof. We explain both so you can choose with the facts. See solar panels and new roofs.
What affects the cost?
The price depends on the system, the area, the roof covering around it, scaffold and the electrical work. We survey and quote a fixed price in writing with the equipment and warranties listed.

In-Roof Solar Panels: your questions answered
Is in-roof solar more expensive?
Generally, yes, because it includes parts of the roof covering and more detailed fitting. If you are re-roofing anyway, the extra cost can be smaller.
Can in-roof panels be added to an existing roof?
Only by stripping the area and re-covering around them, so it is usually done as part of a re-roof or a new roof.
Do in-roof panels work as well as on-roof ones?
They can, but panels run cooler with airflow behind them, so detail matters. We design to the manufacturer’s requirements.
Do they need planning permission?
The same rules as other panels apply: usually permitted development for houses, with extra checks for listed and some conservation area properties.
